In the ancient pre-Christian world, Judaism has always implied some limits upon the authority of temporal rulers, even though the ancient Israelites’ religious beliefs and practices had been intimately woven into the life of the Davidic-Solomonic Kingdom and the successor kingdoms of Israel and Judea. It was, however, with the advent of Christianity that the question of religious liberty – in the sense of the limits on state coercion when it comes to the religious beliefs and practices of individuals and organizations – started to assume profound political and institutional significance.
